What is a Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction surgery is a plastic surgery procedure performed to reduce the size of the breasts while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing look. This procedure is also known as a reduction mammoplasty. In a breast reduction, excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin are removed to achieve a proportionate size. Breast reductions may be performed for cosmetic or medical reasons. Many patients have physical or emotional discomfort associated with their excessively large breasts and can have difficulty leading an active lifestyle. Others may simply find that their large breasts are disproportionate with their frame. To find out if breast reduction is right for you, visit Dr. Falcon at our Natrona Heights office, which is located 15 miles from Fox Chapel and 20 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh.

Am I a Candidate for a Breast Reduction?

Most breast reduction candidates have physical discomfort due to their excessively large breasts. This can include neck, shoulder, or back pain, chafing, irritation or indentations from bra straps, and irritation below the breast crease. Patients also often find difficulty performing certain activities including exercise due to their large breasts. Finally, it can be difficult to find clothing which fits properly. Not all breast reduction candidates will face these physical issues. Some patients may simply be dissatisfied or self-conscious about the appearance of their large breasts. A breast reduction can also be performed as part of a mommy makeover to restore the appearance of the breasts before pregnancy. Finally, good candidates for breast reduction must be generally healthy overall and at or near a healthy and stable weight. It is best that you are a non-smoker before undergoing breast reduction surgery. During a consultation, Dr. Falcon will review your relevant health history and concerns to determine whether a breast reduction is your best option.

“I am so happy I had this procedure done. I feel so light and even feel young again because I can be more mobile. Thank you, Dr. Falcon and Maria for helping me.”

What Can I Expect from Breast Reduction Recovery?

After a breast reduction, swelling and discomfort are both normal. You will wear a support bra which will help minimize swelling and support the breasts through the healing process, and drains may be in place as well. After your procedure, Dr. Falcon will explain how to care for any drains or bandages as necessary. You will need to arrange for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after the surgery and care for you in the early stages of recovery. During this time, prescription pain medication can be used to keep you comfortable. Most patients spend about two weeks away from work, school, or other routines to rest and recover after their breast reduction surgery. During follow-up appointments, Dr. Falcon will monitor your healing and advise when you can safely return to other activities like exercise.

Is Breast Reduction Covered by Insurance?

Breast reduction may be covered by insurance if it is deemed medically necessary. Most health insurance providers require that patients demonstrate a need for breast reduction through failed attempts to resolve issues non-surgically, such as with physical therapy, or a referral from their primary care doctor. In some cases, they may also have a minimum amount of tissue that must be removed to consider the procedure medically necessary. You can contact your insurance provider before a consultation to learn more about your coverage, or call our office to learn more about financing options.
