What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition caused by pressure to the median nerve within the wrist, or carpal tunnel. It may cause a tingling sensation, numbness of the fingers, weakness or aching. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by repetitive motion or overuse, fluid retention during pregnancy, injury to the nerve in the carpal tunnel or rheumatoid arthritis.
Dupuytren’s contracture is a disabling hand disorder in which thick, scar-like tissue bands form within the palm and may extend into the fingers. It can cause restricted movement, bending the fingers into an abnormal position.
If you have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome or Dupuytren’s contracture, a procedure known as carpal tunnel release surgery may be the suggested treatment. This surgery is completed by releasing the ligament that presses on the carpal tunnel, which results in more space for the nerves and tendons, reducing pain and improving function. Am I a Candidate for Carpal Tunnel Surgery?
Most patients who have carpal tunnel syndrome but have not seen improvements from nonsurgical treatments are good candidates for carpal tunnel surgery. Typically, your doctor will suggest options like resting, wearing a wrist splint, cortisone injections, or medications like steroids or anti-inflammatories before moving forward with carpal tunnel surgery. If these options are unsuccessful, they may suggest surgery or refer you to a surgeon like Dr. Falcon.
Some signs you may need surgery include weakened or atrophied muscles of the hands or wrists and symptoms that persist for six months or longer. Before surgery, Dr. Falcon will review your overall health to ensure that surgery is a safe option for you.

What is Recovery Like After Carpal Tunnel Surgery?
After your carpal tunnel surgery, you can expect to wear a splint or heavy bandage for about 1-2 weeks. Some pain or discomfort in your wrist or hand is normal and can be managed with pain medication as prescribed by Dr. Falcon. It is typically best to keep your hand elevated, especially while sleeping, to relieve swelling. Not all patients will need to take time away from work after their carpal tunnel surgery; this usually depends on the specifics of their job duties. After healing, most patients will require some physical therapy to strengthen their muscles and encourage proper movement. Dr. Falcon will monitor your healing progress in post-op appointments, explain what your next steps should be, and let you know when you can safely return to various activities.
