What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Male breast reduction is also referred to as gynecomastia surgery. It is a procedure designed to reduce enlarged breast tissue in men to restore a flatter and more masculine-looking chest.

Gynecomastia is a condition of enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, obesity, or the use of certain prescription drugs. Gynecomastia can be unilateral or bilateral.

Symptoms of gynecomastia include:

  • Hard or lumpy breasts
  • Pain, aching, or tender breasts
  • Bloody breast discharge

To determine what gynecomastia treatment options are best for you, visit Dr. Falcon at our Natrona Heights office, which is located 9 miles from Leechburg and 17 miles from Aspinwall.

Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

Most men who face gynecomastia are good candidates for male breast reduction surgery. Before choosing the procedure, you should be at a healthy and stable weight. Any health conditions that may be contributing to gynecomastia should be resolved or well controlled before undergoing surgery. For example, you must stop taking any prescription drugs or substances contributing to gynecomastia before surgery; this ensures that your results will be as long-lasting as possible. During a consultation, Dr. Falcon will review your health history and examine your chest to determine whether you are suited to gynecomastia surgery. It is important to avoid smoking before and after the procedure to ensure proper healing. At this time, you can also ask any questions you might have about the surgery and review your options.

“Dr. Falcon is an excellent surgeon. No one even knew I had surgery. He is approachable and answered all of my questions. He also has a great sense of humor that put me at ease.”

What is Recovery Like After Gynecomastia Surgery?

Recovery after your male breast reduction will vary depending on the techniques used to restore a masculine chest contour. For example, some patients have liposuction alone to remove fatty tissue from the chest, while other patients require more extensive incisions to remove excess breast tissue and reduce loose or excess skin.

Generally speaking, you can expect about 1-2 weeks of downtime after gynecomastia surgery. During these initial weeks, you should prioritize rest and can expect some swelling and soreness. Discomfort can be treated with pain medication as prescribed, and you will likely wear a compression garment to reduce swelling. Drains may be in place to remove fluid if necessary.

After you return to work or other routines, you should still avoid strenuous activity or exercise until Dr. Falcon says you have healed sufficiently enough to do so.

Is Male Breast Reduction Covered by Health Insurance?

Typically, gynecomastia surgery is not covered by health insurance. The procedure is usually classified as a cosmetic surgery, so it is not eligible for coverage through most insurance plans. You can check with your insurance provider to be sure, or call our office to learn more about financing options for your surgery.
