What is a Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is surgery that helps correct the nasal septum of your nose. This is the small section of bone and cartilage which separates the two nostrils. Some patients are born with an asymmetrical septum, resulting in one nasal passage that is too small. The primary goal of septoplasty is to improve breathing through the nose. In many cases, a septoplasty is combined with a rhinoplasty to both improve breathing and the overall appearance of the nose. To determine if this treatment plan is right for you, Dr. Falcon’s Natrona Heights Office is located 12 miles from Leechburg and 14 miles from Apollo.

Am I a Candidate for a Septoplasty?

Patients with significant septum abnormalities, difficulty with nasal breathing, or have not had adequate symptom relief with medications may benefit from a septoplasty. These patients may be born with a deviated septum or face abnormalities after an injury to the nose. In addition to breathing issues, a deviated septum can cause issues such as frequent nose bleeds or pain. Most patients with a deviated septum are good candidates for septoplasty, as long as they do not have significant health complications that would make surgery unsafe. During a consultation, Dr. Falcon can evaluate your concerns and examine your nose to determine whether a septoplasty is your best option. Often, he may also suggest pairing a septoplasty with rhinoplasty if you are interested in functional as well as cosmetic results.

What is Septoplasty Recovery Like?

A septoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning that you can return home the same day as your surgery as long as you have someone to drive and care for you. You can expect swelling and some discomfort, and your nose may be packed with cotton. Dr. Falcon may prescribe pain medication to help you feel comfortable through the healing process. It’s important to keep your head elevated to reduce swelling, including when you are sleeping. Most patients need about a week to rest and recover before they are ready to return to work or other normal routines. However, you should wait several weeks after your septoplasty before doing anything strenuous, including your exercise routine. During post-op appointments, Dr. Falcon will check in on your healing progress and let you know when you can safely return to various activities.

Is Septoplasty Covered by Health Insurance?

Because a septoplasty is intended to improve your health, breathing, and overall function of the nose, it is typically covered by health insurance. Before scheduling your appointment, it’s best to check in with your health insurance provider to better understand your coverage. If you have any questions about insurance or financing, contact our office. Our staff will be happy to help answer any questions you might have.
