Botox for Migraines: Am I A Candidate?

Do you suffer from migraines? If so, you also may have severe fatigue, nausea, seeing spots, being very sensitive to light, and more. Having migraines frequently is a debilitating condition that limits you in so many ways, as these symptoms can last for a few hours or even a few days. If traditional therapies and medications are not providing relief, your doctor may suggest Botox injections.

How Does Botox Treat Migraines?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a common injectable for easing fine lines in the face. In 2010, the FDA approved Botox to treat chronic migraines since it was found to block pain transmissions.

Women suffer from migraines at a much higher rate than men, and they are also the main users of Botox for reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Botox injections for migraine use an approach and dosage slightly different from the cosmetic procedure, but the injections still help reduce fine lines on the face. Some doctors may also offer additional injections if their patient has lines on their face in addition to migraines, for balanced results.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox Therapy?

You must be at least 18 years old and have chronic migraines for these injections– chronic migraines are defined by 15 incidents a month. At Falcon Plastic Surgery, Dr. Falcon also requires you to have a referral from a neurologist who has given you a migraine diagnosis. As with all cosmetic treatments, an experienced practitioner is the only person who can determine if you are a suitable candidate.

What Happens When I Get Botox Injections?

You’ll receive a series of injections with a thin needle in your face, neck, and head. Dr. Falcon will choose the muscles where you feel the most pain when having a migraine. The process takes about 15 minutes and can feel similar to getting a tattoo.

You can expect to see a decrease in frequency and symptoms of migraines in two to four weeks. Longevity ranges, with some being permanent and others needing maintenance injections every three months. Every patient’s anatomy is unique, so results vary.
