What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable which uses a purified form of botulinum toxin as its active ingredient. Injectables using this ingredient are known as neuromodulators, which include products such as Botox or Dysport.

Injecting Botox disrupts muscular nerve signals, which weakens the muscles where the product is injected. When injected to specific areas of the face, this means that unwanted wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions are smoothed. These lines are called dynamic wrinkles, and can include crow’s feet, forehead lines, frown lines, or neck bands. Using careful injection techniques, Dr. Falcon can soften the facial expressions that cause or worsen these wrinkles while still allowing you to express yourself naturally. Our Natrona Heights Office is located 15 miles from Fox Chapel and 17 miles from Aspinwall.

Am I a Candidate for Botox?

Botox or Dysport are great options for patients who have dynamic wrinkles. In particular, Botox and Dysport are used to treat wrinkles near the eyes or forehead that form when you squint, frown, or smile. Some patients may also choose Botox or Dysport injections to prevent wrinkles from forming or worsening. The average age of a first-time Botox patient is about 35-40, though some may choose injections beginning as early as their mid- to late-twenties for preventative reasons.

Before choosing Botox, you should be in good overall health. Some patients who take blood-thinning medication are not good candidates for Botox, for example. During a consultation, Dr. Falcon will review your health concerns and the treatment area to determine whether you are a good candidate for Botox.

“The surgery center nurses were so nice. They answered all my questions and helped me prepare for the big day. They even called me the next day just to check in on me.”

What Can I Expect After Botox Injections?

Botox injections are a quick procedure which requires no downtime. You may notice some redness or swelling at the injection site. For about 24 hours, it is best to avoid exercise or other strenuous activity to avoid bruising, but you can otherwise go about your routine as normal. Botox results are usually noticeable about a week after you receive your injections.

Botox is not permanent, as the body will naturally and safely break down the product over time. On average, Botox results will last about four to six months after your initial injections. You can receive regular maintenance injections to keep up your results if you choose.
