Blepharoplasty (Eye Lift)

Blepharoplasty, also known as eye lift or eyelid surgery, can help to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Over time, the delicate skin around the eyes can show signs of aging including drooping, sagging, and wrinkles. This can create an unhappy appearance or even obstruct vision in cases of excess sagging. Through blepharoplasty, the eyelids can be restored for a youthful, refreshed, and awake appearance.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of the eyelids by reducing excess skin and smoothing wrinkles. Surgery can be performed on either the upper and lower lids, or both. Blepharoplasty can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a brow lift for more complete rejuvenation and anti-aging results. To determine if this is the right treatment plan for you, Dr. Falcon’s Natrona Heights Office is located 15 miles from Fox Chapel and 17 miles from Aspinwall.

Who is a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Typically, blepharoplasty patients see wrinkles, sagging, or other signs of aging in the eyelids. In less common cases, younger patients may also choose blepharoplasty to adjust the genetic appearance of their eyelids or reduce natural drooping.

Eyelid surgery can help to treat:

  • Loose or sagging skin that disrupts the natural contour of the upper eyelid sometimes impairing vision
  • Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
  • Drooping lower eyelids
  • Excess skin and wrinkles of the lower eyelid.

During a consultation, Dr. Falcon will also review your health history to ensure that blepharoplasty is a suitable and safe choice for you. Often, you will be asked to have an exam with an ophthalmologist to ensure the health of the eyes before moving forward with blepharoplasty.

“Dr. Falcon did a Blepharoplasty (upper eyelid lift) on me. I couldn't be happier and looking forward to the next surgery! His father Dr. Joseph Falcon did the same procedure on my mother 30 years ago and her eyes still look good! I would highly recommend Dr. Falcon!”

What is Recovery Like After Blepharoplasty?

After your blepharoplasty, you can return home with a trusted family member or friend who can drive and care for you. Recovery usually takes place over about two weeks. During this time, swelling, bruising, and discomfort are all normal. You may experience dryness or itching in your eyes. Cold compresses can be used to reduce swelling as you heal. You may also experience light sensitivity, so it can be helpful to wear dark sunglasses. Dr. Falcon will likely prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable through healing. As you heal, it’s important to keep your head elevated, including while sleeping. Avoid bending over for at least four weeks after your surgery. During post-op appointments, Dr. Falcon will evaluate your healing progress and advise when you can safely return to all activities, like exercise.

Is Blepharoplasty Covered by Insurance?

Lower blepharoplasty is usually not covered by health insurance. However, some upper blepharoplasties may be considered medically necessary if an ophthalmologist determines that the upper eyelid impairs your vision because of excessive drooping. Contact your health insurance provider to learn more about what is covered in your plan. If you have any other questions about insurance or financing options, our staff will be happy to help.

Eyelid Surgery FAQs

What is the best age for an eyelid lift?

There’s no “perfect” age for an eyelid lift since it depends more on your anatomy and personal concerns than a number. Many people consider the procedure in their 40s to 60s, but age is not a major limiting factor if you're in good health and have realistic expectations.

Is 60 too old for blepharoplasty?

Many patients in their 60s and even 70s have successful eyelid surgery with excellent results. The key factor is overall health; if you’re healthy, a non-smoker, and free of conditions that impair healing, you are likely a good candidate regardless of age.

Are you put to sleep for an eyelid lift?

Not necessarily; upper eyelid surgery is often performed under local anesthesia with sedation, meaning you’re relaxed but awake. Lower eyelid surgery may be done under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure and patient preference.

How many years does blepharoplasty take off your face?

Blepharoplasty can make you look about 5 to 10 years younger, depending on the extent of aging and the results achieved. While it doesn't stop the aging process, the improvement is long-lasting.

Who is not a candidate for eyelid surgery?

You may not be a good candidate for blepharoplasty if you have severe eye conditions (like dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, or retinal issues), uncontrolled medical problems (such as diabetes or high blood pressure), or unrealistic expectations about the outcome.

What’s the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty targets drooping upper eyelids and excess skin that may obstruct vision or create a heavy-lidded look. Lower blepharoplasty focuses on the under-eye area, addressing puffiness, bags, and wrinkles. The techniques and goals differ, but both procedures aim to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

How do I know if I need upper or lower blepharoplasty?

A consultation with a board-certified facial plastic or oculoplastic surgeon is the best way to determine what you would most benefit from. If you have hooded eyelids or your upper lids interfere with vision, upper blepharoplasty may help. However, lower blepharoplasty might be appropriate if you’re bothered by under-eye bags, puffiness, or sagging skin beneath the eyes.

Can I be alone after eyelid surgery?

It’s not recommended to be alone immediately after eyelid surgery; you’ll need someone to drive you home and ideally stay with you for at least the first 24 hours to assist with medication, cold compresses, and basic needs. After the first day, you can usually manage independently if you're careful and follow post-op instructions.

How long do you have to sleep sitting up after eyelid surgery?

Most surgeons recommend sleeping with your head elevated—ideally at a 30 to 45-degree angle—for the first 3 to 5 days after surgery. You don’t have to sleep fully upright, but using extra pillows or a wedge pillow can be helpful.

Can I watch TV after blepharoplasty?

Watching TV is generally safe a day or two after surgery, as long as it doesn't strain your eyes. Use artificial tears if your eyes feel dry, and take breaks to rest your eyes. Avoid prolonged screen time in the first few days, especially if you’re still experiencing swelling or light sensitivity.
