What are PDO Threads
PDO threads are the main component of a thread lift. The threads are made up of polydioxanone (PDO), the same material that is used for surgical sutures. During the thread lift procedure, these threads are inserted beneath the skin’s surface to increase collagen production and lift the skin for a more youthful appearance.
PDO threads can work to address a variety of aesthetic concerns, including sagging skin, nasolabial folds, lines and wrinkles, hollowness, and jowls.
There are two different types of PDO threads that we use at Falcon Plastic Surgery: barbed and smooth threads.
Barbed Threads
Barbed threads are designed to lift the skin. They work by using tiny barbs on each thread that physically lift the skin. If you need a more significant lift, barbed threads are the perfect solution. This type works best on the cheeks and the jawline and offers immediate results.
Smooth Threads
Smooth PDO threads are primarily used to stimulate collagen production and improve the skin texture and skin firmness over time. Instead of providing immediate results like barbed threads do, smooth threads offer more subtle enhancements as the collagen builds up in the skin over the following weeks and months.
Often, barbed and smooth threads are used together for the best results.
What is a Thread Lift Procedure
A thread lift is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that lifts and tightens the skin to give you a younger-looking appearance. By carefully inserting PDO threads into the skin, the procedure lifts the skin and stimulates collagen production to smooth and firm the treatment area and lift the skin to a more youthful position. As the collagen builds up over time, it creates a firmer and more supple appearance.
Because the procedure is nonsurgical, recovery is very short, and you can get back to your normal activities almost immediately.
“I had minimal scarring on face after surgery, I was very pleased with my results.”
Benefits of PDO Thread Lifts
PDO thread lifts offer a number of benefits, including the following:
- Minimal downtime: While you might experience some mild redness, swelling, and bruising, those side effects will typically subside within 24-48 hours, and most patients can return to their normal activities within a week.
- Low risk of complications: Unlike a traditional facelift that comes with the risk of complications, a thread lift comes with very few risks. Most patients only experience temporary side effects.
- No scarring: Because there are no incisions made, you never have to worry about scarring with a thread lift
- Little to no discomfort: Most patients only experience a mild pinch or some slight pressure, but beyond that, you shouldn’t feel any discomfort.
- Long-lasting results: While results can differ from person to person, you can expect to see your improvements for a year or more.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
Most of the areas around the face can be treated with the PDO thread lift. If you’re experiencing lines and wrinkles, sagging, jowls, or other signs of aging around the eyes, cheeks, jawline, or neck, this aesthetic treatment could be the best option for your needs.

Good Candidates for a PDO Thread Lift
Most patients looking to address signs of aging are good candidates for a PDO thread lift. Beyond that, we recommend you meet certain criteria. Patients are typically in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, have mild to moderate skin laxity, are in good overall health, are nonsmokers, and are looking for a minimally-invasive alternative to a facelift.
What to Expect with a PDO Thread Lift
The thread lift procedure is relatively straightforward. To start, we’ll cleanse the treatment area. We can also apply a topical anesthetic if needed. From there, Dr. Falcon will insert the threads into the skin and gently lift and manipulate the threads to lift and smooth the skin to achieve the desired results. The threads will then be trimmed, and you’ll be ready to start the recovery process.
Before Your Thread Lift
Before your thread lift, you’ll first want to schedule a consultation with our board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Falcon. During this appointment, he’ll examine your face, review your medical history, and answer and address all your questions and concerns.
To prepare for your appointment, you’ll want to avoid blood-thinning medications, harsh skincare products and treatments, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise. You should also stay as hydrated as possible.
Thread Lift Aftercare
To achieve the best results, you should avoid strenuous activity and limit your facial movements for the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment. We also recommend sleeping on your back with your head elevated for up to two weeks, so you don’t put unnecessary pressure on the treatment area. Avoiding excess sun exposure and makeup for the first few days is also recommended. Dr. Falcon will give you a detailed list to ensure you can maintain your results as long as possible.
As for results, you will see some improvements immediately, but it can take a few weeks for collagen to build up in the skin and for full results to be visible.
How Long Does a PDO Thread Lift Last?
Generally, a PDO thread lift can last anywhere from 12 to 18 months or longer. After the threads dissolve, you will need repeated treatment to maintain your younger-looking results. That said, results can vary and depend on the condition of your skin, your lifestyle, and the types of threads that are used.
