Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery
Posted on November 29, 2023
Gynecomastia surgery is referred to as male breast reduction or lift. While the recovery process can vary from patient to patient, the recovery will generally follow the same timeline. Depending on your pain tolerance or amount of tissue removed during the procedure, certain tips can make your recovery much more comfortable.
Other factors, like the type of gynecomastia you had performed, can also determine your recovery process. Falcon Plastic Surgery offers a peak into what you can expect during the recovery from gynecomastia, including tips and tricks for a faster recovery.
Recovery Timeline
The typical recovery time for gynecomastia surgery is four to six weeks. This time period depends on your general health going into the surgery and the surgical procedure itself. If you have another procedure performed in conjunction with gynecomastia, or you have additional aesthetic concerns that are addressed during surgery, you recovery can take longer. During a consultation and post-op checkups, your surgeon will be able to inform you of a more specific recovery timeline, including when it is safe to return to normal activities and work.
Post-Op Recovery
During your consultation, your surgeon will provide you with in-depth information concerning your post-surgery responsibilities. You will receive information about drains placed at the incisions site and how to properly care for them, as well as how to spot signs of complications. It is imperative that you follow the aftercare instructions very carefully. These can include caring for your drains, taking antibiotics, abstaining from certain activities, and wearing compression garments for the proper amount of time.
Expectations After Gynecomastia Surgery
Every patient will have a different experience with their post-surgery recovery, but everyone will be sent home with bandages around the chest and a compression garment that must be worn as directed.
It is normal to experience pain and discomfort after the anesthesia wears off. If the pain lasts longer than normal, contact your surgeon. The first three days after your procedure are crucial to proper recovery and satisfactory results. You should plan on taking it easy and getting lot’s of rest during this time.
You will have very limited movement for the first few days. You will be advised not to make any unnecessary movements so as to avoid opening up your incisions.
Tips For Better Recovery
For a more comfortable and more speedy recovery, you should keep the following tips in mind.

- Wear your compression garment.
- Attend post-op appointments.
- Take prescription medication.
- Drink plenty of water.
